The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6298 stands among the most historically important transitional references in vintage Rolex history. Produced during the early 1950s, the 6298 bridges the gap between Rolex’s legendary Bubbleback era and the birth of the Rolex Explorer line that would soon follow.

Often referred to by collectors as a “Pre-Explorer,” the Ref. 6298 features the iconic oversized 36mm Oyster case paired with the highly sought-after 3-6-9 dial configuration that would later define the Explorer aesthetic. At a time when most wristwatches measured closer to 32mm–34mm, the 6298 represented Rolex’s evolution toward the modern sport watch.

This example remains an exceptionally honest and attractive survivor, featuring its original stainless steel Oyster case, original silver 3-6-9 dial, and original Rolex rivet Oyster bracelet. The watch retains the unmistakable “Ovettone” or “Big Bubbleback” profile — named for the rounded caseback required to house Rolex’s early automatic movement architecture.

The understated monochromatic appearance, balanced dial layout, and rich vintage patina give this watch the exact character collectors seek in early Rolex sport references today.

Highly collectible and increasingly difficult to source in original condition, the Ref. 6298 is regarded as one of the purest early Rolex Oyster Perpetual references and an important precursor to the Explorer lineage.
