Patek Philippe Just Dropped Seven Limited Editions in Milan — Including a First-Ever Platinum Complication

As its Watch Art Grand Exhibition opens in Milan today, Patek unveiled 685 watches made only for Italy — led by a brand-new instantaneous perpetual calendar chronograph and a red-green-white "tricolore" Calatrava trio.

Patek throws Italy a party — and makes the watches to match

Every few years, Patek Philippe stages a Watch Art Grand Exhibition: a free, museum-scale show of its watchmaking, staged in a single host city. The seventh edition opens today in Milan, running from October 2 through October 18 at the CityOval, with around 500 watches across 15 themed rooms. And as it always does for these events, Patek marked the occasion by releasing a wave of limited editions sold only through its retailers in Italy.

This time there are seven references totaling 685 watches — a mix of brand-new launches and special one-market variants. The headline is a genuinely new grand complication in platinum, but the detail collectors are already screenshotting is a set of three Calatravas finished in red, green, and white: the colors of the Italian flag.

A platinum first: the Ref. 5978P-010

The technical showstopper is the Ref. 5978P-010, a 42mm platinum watch that, for the first time in this configuration, pairs an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a chronograph. "Instantaneous" is the key word: its roughly 500 components snap the day, date, month, and leap-year displays to their new positions in about 30 milliseconds at midnight, rather than creeping over several minutes as most calendars do. The hand-wound CH 29-535 PS QI movement carries a 55–60 hour power reserve, and the navy dial fades to black with red chronograph accents and calendar text in Italian. It is limited to 120 pieces and priced around $337,000.

Three Calatravas, one Italian flag

The emotional heart of the collection is a trio of 38mm white-gold Calatravas finished in the three colors of the Italian tricolore. It is the kind of coordinated release that turns into a collector obsession — in theory, one person could own all three and wear the flag on their wrist, though the red model's five-piece run makes a complete set almost impossible.

Reference What It Is
7047G-010 — Red Calatrava Minute Repeater with vivid red lacquer dial and matching alligator strap. Just 5 pieces.
7147G-010 — Green Calatrava Perpetual Calendar (cal. 240 Q) with green lacquer dial and Italian-language day/month. 100 pieces.
7007G-010 — White Time-and-date Calatrava with a rich, near-enamel white lacquer dial. 200 pieces.

The red minute repeater is the connoisseur's pick: beyond the color, its lineage traces to a 1990s Calatrava that grew out of a proposed Ferrari collaboration that never happened — which makes the Italian-red dial a quiet in-joke decades in the making.

A steel Aquanaut — and two enamel maps of Milan

For collectors who prefer sport to formalwear, Patek created a steel Aquanaut Ref. 5167A-014, limited to 250 pieces. It pairs a 40.8mm steel case with a midnight-blue sunburst dial that fades to black at the rim, a red minute track and red seconds hand, and a "Patek Philippe Milano 2026" inscription on the sapphire caseback. In a market where steel sports watches set the tone, a new Aquanaut variant is always a magnet.

Then there are the two that stop watchmakers in their tracks: the World Time Minute Repeaters 5531G-012 and 5531G-013, "Milan by Day" and "Milan by Night." Each centers a grand feu cloisonné enamel map of central Milan — the Duomo at its heart — executed by the studio of legendary enamellist Anita Porchet, with the day version in pale terracotta tones and the night version in glowing yellow. They chime local time in any of 24 zones, and only five of each will ever exist.

Why a watch made in 5 pieces matters to the rest of us

You will almost certainly never buy one of these — most are already spoken for, and a five-piece enamel minute repeater is the definition of unobtainable. So why does it matter? Because releases like this set the temperature of the entire watch market. When Patek pours its best enamel, chiming, and perpetual-calendar work into a single city's exhibition, it signals where demand and prestige are heading — and that ripple reaches the pre-owned and everyday luxury-watch market where real collecting actually happens.

A few takeaways worth noting: Patek is leaning hard into color and lacquer dials (red, green, white, blue fumé) rather than plain silver; it is putting perpetual calendars into more casual cases; and hand-finished enamel remains the ultimate flex. Those are exactly the traits that age well and hold value. If you follow the watch world even casually, this is the kind of launch that tells you what to watch for next.

"It would not be a Watch Art Grand Exhibition without a World Time Minute Repeater with a city map on the dial." A complicated movement wrapped around a miniature portrait of the host city is Patek's signature way of turning an event into an heirloom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Patek Philippe release in Milan? +

Seven limited-edition references — 685 watches in total — created for the Italian market to mark the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milano 2026, which runs October 2–18. They include a new platinum perpetual calendar chronograph, a steel Aquanaut, a red-green-white Calatrava trio, and two enamel "Milan" World Time minute repeaters.

What is the most important new watch of the group? +

The Ref. 5978P-010: a 42mm platinum watch that combines an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a chronograph. Its calendar snaps to a new date in roughly 30 milliseconds. It's limited to 120 pieces and priced around $337,000.

Why are three of the watches red, green, and white? +

Those are the colors of the Italian flag — the tricolore. Patek finished three white-gold Calatravas in red (a minute repeater), green (a perpetual calendar), and white (a time-and-date model) as a tribute to the host country.

How rare are these watches? +

Extremely. The red Calatrava minute repeater and each of the two enamel Milan World Time repeaters are limited to just five pieces. The larger runs — the Aquanaut (250) and white Calatrava (200) — are still tiny by mass-market standards, and all are sold only through Patek retailers in Italy.

Can I buy one? +

Realistically, no — these are allocated to Patek's Italian clients and are not sold online. But the exhibition itself is free and open to the public in Milan through October 18, and most references will surface on the secondary market in time.
