Understanding Our Watch Condition Grades

Pre-owned and vintage watches naturally vary in age, wear, originality, service history, and previous refinishing. Our condition grades are designed to make those differences easier to understand before you purchase.

New / Unworn

No meaningful signs of prior wear.

A watch represented as new or unworn has not been meaningfully worn and should show no visible signs of normal use. Depending on its age or how it was stored, packaging may show light handling or shelf wear, and protective stickers or tags may not always be present.

Case and bracelet show no meaningful wear from use
Crystal and dial are free of wear-related damage
May include original box, papers, tags, or accessories when stated in the individual listing

Excellent

Exceptionally clean with minimal evidence of wear.

An excellent-condition watch is pre-owned but presents exceptionally well. Very light hairlines or faint signs of careful use may be visible under close inspection. Original edges, finishing, engravings, and overall proportions should remain well defined.

Only minimal cosmetic wear
No significant dents, chips, or deep scratches unless specifically disclosed
Bracelet or strap remains clean with limited wear for its age

Very Good

Light signs of normal, careful use.

A very-good-condition watch shows normal evidence of previous ownership without major cosmetic issues. Light scratches, hairlines, small marks, or moderate bracelet wear may be present, but the watch remains attractive and well preserved overall.

Minor bracelet stretch or strap wear may be present
Watch may have been professionally polished or refinished in the past if disclosed or identifiable

Good

Visible wear consistent with regular use.

A good-condition watch shows clear signs of wear while remaining presentable and suitable for continued use. Scratches, scuffs, small dents, softened finishing, bracelet stretch, or strap wear may be visible.

Visible cosmetic wear is expected
Engravings or case finishing may show age or previous polishing
Any material damage or functional concern known to us will be noted in the individual listing

Fair / Vintage Wear

Significant wear, age, or restoration is visible.

Watches in fair condition show substantial cosmetic wear, age-related changes, restoration, or other notable characteristics. This grade is often appropriate for older vintage watches whose originality, rarity, or character may matter more than cosmetic perfection.

Noticeable scratches, dents, wear, patina, or bracelet/strap deterioration may be present
Replacement, restored, or refinished components may be present when disclosed or identifiable
Condition should always be considered in context with the watch’s age and individual history

Important: Condition grading is inherently visual and comparative. A 50-year-old vintage watch and a modern pre-owned watch are not judged by identical expectations. The photos and description on the individual product page should always be considered part of the condition disclosure.

What We Look At When Evaluating a Watch

An overall condition grade only tells part of the story. We consider the individual components that most directly affect a watch’s appearance, originality, usability, and value.

Case

Scratches, dents, edge definition, lug shape, finishing, previous polishing, corrosion, and overall preservation.

Dial & Hands

Originality, spotting, discoloration, moisture damage, lume condition, refinishing, replaced hands, and age-related patina.

Bezel

Scratches, dents, insert condition, fading, alignment, engraving definition, and evidence of replacement or refinishing.

Crystal

Scratches, chips, cracks, abrasions, replacement history when known, and clarity appropriate to the crystal material.

Caseback

Scratches, dents, engravings, tool marks, polishing, corrosion, and preservation of factory markings.

Bracelet / Strap

Stretch, scratches, link condition, sizing, leather wear, cracking, staining, replacement parts, and remaining usability.

Clasp & Buckle

Function, wear, scratches, engraving definition, security, and whether the clasp or buckle appears original to the watch.

Movement & Functions

Basic operation and functions are considered alongside any service information or known mechanical concerns stated in the listing.

Other Details That Matter

Box & Papers

“Box and papers” describes the accessories accompanying a watch; it is separate from the watch’s physical condition. If original box, warranty card, certificate, manuals, tags, or service documents are included, we aim to identify them in the listing.

Polishing & Refinishing

Many pre-owned watches have been professionally polished during their lifetime. A careful polish can improve appearance, while repeated or aggressive polishing can soften original lines and edges. When previous refinishing is known or reasonably identifiable, it may be noted.

Service History

Service history is included when reliable information is available. If a service date is unknown, that does not automatically mean a watch requires service. Mechanical condition and future service needs can vary by watch.

Original vs. Replacement Parts

Vintage and pre-owned watches may contain manufacturer service parts, replacement straps, crystals, crowns, bezels, dials, hands, or other components. Known material replacements or customizations are disclosed when identified.

Water Resistance

Water resistance should never be assumed solely from a model’s original factory specification, especially on a pre-owned or vintage watch. Unless a current pressure test is specifically stated, we recommend having water resistance verified before exposure to water.

Accuracy

Mechanical watches can gain or lose time, and performance varies with age, movement type, position, service history, and use. Any specific timing or accuracy result applies only when expressly stated for that individual watch.
