Cartier Opens Its Menagerie in Istanbul

For nearly eighty years, one animal has ruled the house of Cartier: the panther. On September 1, 2026, the maison decided the big cat could use some company. Unveiled with a two-day celebration on the island of Büyükada in Istanbul — with guests including Suhana Khan, Ishaan Khatter, Nadine Labaki and Tuba Büyüküstün — the new high jewellery collection Into the Wild introduces five brand-new creatures: a tiger, a parrot, a carp, a crocodile and a rhinoceros.

At its heart is a new ring series, The Gallery of Animal Portraits (part of the Faune et Flore de Cartier line), plus articulated necklaces, bracelets and pins for the tiger and crocodile, a fresh cast of panther jewels, and a medallion-shaped Panthère jewellery watch. Below, we walk through every new piece — grouped exactly the way Cartier built them.

The New Ring Silhouettes

The collection's foundation is a set of five sculptural animal-head rings — direct descendants of the panther-head ring Cartier introduced in the 2000s. Each one creates striking volume on the hand, capturing an animal "at the moment of expression rather than at rest." The maison's lapidaries and gem-setters recreate fur, scales and skin through carving and specialised paving, so every silhouette reads as a tiny portrait rather than a literal replica.

Each ring gets its own gemstone palette, chosen to echo the creature's character. Here's how the five silhouettes break down:

The Other New Pieces

Two of the five creatures — the crocodile and the tiger — step beyond the rings and stretch into fully articulated necklaces, bracelets and a pair of pins, engineered so the jewel moves like the living animal. On both, the clasp is hidden inside the mouth. Each piece below is ready for its own image.

The showstopping duo. On the necklace, the head is the clasp — integrated into the mouth, biting down to complete the circle; the diamond-paved head has vivid green eyes, scales built from reverse-set diamonds, and a crest of black onyx spikes, bordered by rows of green chrysoprase beads and pink rubellite accents. The matching bracelet echoes it exactly: a wave of inverted-set diamonds punctuated with onyx and finished along the borders in chrysoprase and rubellites — Cartier's black-white-green crocodile palette, alive on the skin.

The crocodile is also reimagined as a pair of charming pins — a wearable, scaled-down take on the motif that nods to Cartier's historic crocodile brooches.

An icy-blue big cat: dumortierite-quartz stripes, sapphire paving across head and body, aquamarine eyes, and a galuchat-effect diamond head. The lifelike head contrasts with an abstract, graphic body.

Its body runs on a fully articulated gold structure of moveable links, so it follows the wrist. Dumortierite quartz and sapphires form the pattern, finished with chalcedony beads each studded with an inverted sapphire; the clasp hides in the mouth.

Like the crocodile, the tiger also arrives as a pair of pins — the same blue-toned palette and carved detailing, shrunk into a versatile, everyday-luxury format.

Emerald Paved Necklace

A pure expression of the same Faune et Flore de Cartier line: a supple white-gold necklace fully paved in brilliant diamonds and set with rich green emeralds, with mother-of-pearl accents. Where the animals bring drama, this piece brings the collection's nature theme back to elegant abstraction — a diamond-and-emerald river designed to catch the light from every angle.

Panthère Jewellery Watch

The collection's headline timepiece. Made at Cartier's Maison des Métiers d'Art in La Chaux-de-Fonds and built on the traditional principle of the cameo, this medallion-shaped watch places a sculpted panther over the dial. Onyx forms the nose and dial, tsavorite garnets glint as eyes, diamonds ring the bezel and all four lugs, and black lacquer — drawn from the House's vintage archive — completes the markings. It takes three artisans working in concert: the designer, the gem-setter and the lacquerer.

Tortue Panthère Métiers d'Art

Cartier's other major 2026 panther watch, revealed earlier this year at Watches & Wonders. Champlevé enamel carries the panther — resting behind a curtain of rain — across the dial and the entire case middle, using more than 15 enamel tones and 36 firings. It runs the hand-wound calibre 430 MC and comes in two limited editions of 100 (white gold with emerald eyes, or yellow gold with tsavorite eyes).

Crocodile Jewellery Watch

The wildest of the trio. A sculpted 18k white-gold crocodile coils around the case, its body and head forming the frame while its jaw reaches onto the gem-set dial — finished with a life-like cabochon emerald eye. The Métiers d'Art version pavés some 341 brilliant-cut diamonds (about 3 carats) with 53 sapphires and mother-of-pearl inlay across the case, and Cartier offers it in several colourways, including all-diamond and diamond-with-emerald editions.

The New Panther Pieces

Five new creatures may share the spotlight, but the Panthère is far from forgotten. In Into the Wild she returns in a pristine, snow-white register — proof that after nearly eight decades, Cartier's most famous animal still has new expressions in her. Here are the standout new panther jewels, each with room for a full image.

Panthère Tête-à-Tête Bracelet

The showpiece of the panther chapter. Two panther heads meet across the wrist — a "tête-à-tête" — with a coat rendered entirely in paved diamonds and spotted with geometric diamonds. Cartier alternates a galuchat-effect paving in varied diamond sizes with a caviar paving, keeping the light moving between the densely set zones and the bare, polished white gold. It's an all-white study in texture and restraint.

The Snow Panther

A second new panther interpretation: a snow panther with emerald eyes, each eye ringed by Cartier's signature fur setting so the surface reads as soft, textured coat rather than flat pavé. Those vivid emerald eyes are the single hit of colour against the white diamonds — the same trick that has made the panther unforgettable since 1948.

And of course, the panther also takes the dial in the new Panthère jewellery watch above — a reminder that, at Cartier, the line between a fine watch and a wearable sculpture has always been beautifully blurry. A Century of Cartier Creatures

Cartier's love affair with the animal world is older than the panther itself. Birds and insects appeared in its jewels at the dawn of the twentieth century, followed by reptiles, big cats, chimeras, zebras and elephants. The panther first showed up as a decorative motif on a 1914 wristwatch, but it wasn't until 1948 that it took three-dimensional form — when the Duke of Windsor commissioned Jeanne Toussaint to create a crouching gold-and-enamel panther perched atop a cabochon emerald of more than 116 carats for the Duchess of Windsor.

The crocodile has its own legend, too: in the 1970s, Mexican actress María Félix famously commissioned a pair of articulated Cartier crocodiles — reportedly bringing a live baby crocodile to the Rue de la Paix boutique as a reference. Into the Wild picks up that thread, but this time the spotlight is shared across the whole menagerie.

A Panther on the Seine

The theme spills well past the jewellery boxes. From September 1, a 1,400-square-metre panther was installed across the façade of the Hôtel-Dieu overlooking the Seine in Paris — recreated at architectural scale using marquetry, ceramics, lacquer and mosaic. Further interpretations are planned for London, Milan, Shanghai, Tokyo, Miami and New York, and Cartier has produced five short animal fables with sets built from straw, glass marquetry, mosaic and paper sculpture.
